Frequently Asked Questions about The Pocket Grill

Where can I buy a Pocket Grill?

The Pocket Grill is for sale now for $39.99 (free shipping) or $49.99 for both the Pocket Grill and the Pocket Grill cookbook as well. Here’s a link to our purchase page.

My Pocket Grill got dirty while I was cooking at camp and there’s no water around to clean it before packing it up. Can I wash its carrying case in the laundry machine when I get home?

Yes, your Pocket Grill’s carrying case is completely safe to wash in a laundry machine. Alternatively, you can turn it inside out and wash it in the sink, then let it air dry.

What’s the best way to set up my Pocket Grill over my fire?

Our favorite method for setting up the Pocket Grill is to assemble the whole thing in your fire pit after you’ve built your fire but before you’ve lit it. This allows you to adjust your grill, making sure it’s level and stable before starting your fire.

However, if you’re not able to start a fire beneath your Pocket Grill, you can assemble it away from the fire. Hold one short end of the Grill and have a friend hold the other short end. Then, carefully lower the grill over your fire, making sure all four legs have contacted the ground. Do NOT use this method if your fire is taller than your assembled Pocket Grill! Wait for your fire to die down a bit to around the height of your Grill, which will be ideal open fire cooking conditions for your food.

What’s the best way to remove my Pocket Grill from a fire, especially if I want to keep the fire alive?

We recommend using a pair of tongs to carefully lift your Pocket Grill away from the flames and allow it to cool. Because of the way that the grate fits snugly around the corner brackets, it will be possible for you to move the entire Pocket Grill at once.

HELP! Aliens stole my Pocket Grill.

….Sorry. We know everyone wants a Pocket Grill, especially if they’re not from Earth. But hey, if this happens to you, we’ll see you on the national news and be sure to send you a new one.

What kind of fuel does Pocket Grill use?

In the wilderness, we recommend using dry, fallen branches from trees local to the campsite. Please minimize the impact on your surroundings.

At campgrounds, you may be required to use cast-iron charcoal-burning grills that are rusty or dirty from previous users. Never fear, your clean Pocket Grill can be placed on top of these! Just leave the Pocket Grill’s legs partially folded up, so it doesn’t stand as tall. This way, the Pocket Grill’s stainless steel grate will hover inches above the cast iron grate which then need not touch your food.

How much does the Pocket Grill weigh?

It weighs about a pound and a half. We engineered it to be as light as possible while still having greater stability and cooking surface area than any other portable grill. If you want a lighter version (did someone say titanium?), then drop us an email! If we get enough requests, we’ll go for it!

How easy is it to fold up after cooking at my camp?

In a word: Easy. You can prevent food from sticking to the stainless steel the same way you would for any stainless steel cookware: apply a little cooking oil. Also, the grate is held together by springs that allow for some play in the folding process (designed intentionally as such for this reason). The grate, springs, and legs are all stainless steel and dishwasher safe.

Will the Pocket Grill make my pockets dirty?

That’s why it comes with a carrying pouch! We realized not for everyone or every time would there be an easy place to clean the grill in the woods. But, not only is the portable grill dishwasher safe: the pouch is also washing machine safe!

How fast does the Pocket Grill cool down, once removed from heat?

It’ll be cool by the time you’re done eating, unless you take fewer than 10 minutes to eat a nicely grilled meal! Because the grate and legs are long, thin pieces of stainless steel, they’ll cool more quickly than say, a thick stainless pot or pan would. As always, around fire, use caution! If you want to play it the safest, then leave the grill in place until well after the fire has been completely extinguished.

Do I need a fire pit with a ring of rocks to use the Pocket Grill?

No, the grill can stand on its own on flat ground, uneven ground, boulders, and even inside of coal-burning fixed-place camp ranges. Its legs are adjustable, angled, and have enough natural play to accommodate a fair deal of unevenness.

The reason our main video shows a ringed fire pit is that containing your campfire helps prevent forest fires. We aim to make Smokey proud by encouraging good campsite etiquette!

Should I use the Pocket Grill with Fire Starter Logs?

We recommend that you do not use the Pocket Grill with any sort of manufactured fire logs.  These types of logs are treated chemically and could leave unhealthy carcinogens in your food.  Just play it safe and only use the nature firewood nature provides on its own.
